Planters and Bowls

Planters, bowls, plates and vases in East Indian porcelain were commonly depicted in still life paintings from the 17th and 18th century.
Already a few hundred years earlier Chinese porcelain had reached Europe by way of “The Silk Road”.

Swatow

Swatow was just a little fishing village in the Ming period and can hardly be the shipping harbour for porcelain at the time, so why this type of collectors ceramic is called Swatow is a little puzzling. There were several manufacturers along this part of the Chinese coast at the time, and typical for this ceramic is that it is a little coarser and more naive and has a very special colour palette. Swatow ware is very sought after by collectors.

The Marieberg company

The Marieberg company was established by Johan Ehrenreich 1759 and started manufacturing faiance products but soon switched to porcelain. The factory is probably most famous for the ceramic stoves. After some economic setbacks Marieberg was sold to a competitor.

The Ming dynasty

The Ming dynasty lasted between 1368 and 1644, the first Emperor was Zhu Yuanzhang. It was a very stable and organized society where art flourished.

Luneville

Luneville was the seat of the ex-king of Poland, Stanisław I Leszczyński, father-in-law to king Louis XV of France. The local faiance manufacturer was by appointment to the small exiled Polish court in Luneville and with the help of Stanisław and his connections at the court in Paris became quite popular in wider circles. The factory existed long into the late 1900’s.

La grand encyclopedie

In the last half of the 18th century Denis Diderot and Jean d’Alembert published an encyclopedia that was to revolutionize the world. This work contained everything that was known to man so far. Different passages in dressage riding are depicted in detail. Simply Scandinavia will produce these illustrations on flowerpots in the future.

A female pioneer

As a young girl Maria Sibylla Merian collected moths and butterflies and coached by her father she drew and painted what she saw. She soon became the leading illustrator in her field and was much admired by Linnaeus. The illustrations on our new flowerpot “Merian” are taken from her book Ericarum Ortus published in 1679.

William Chambers

was born in Gothenburg but made his career in England and became one of Europe’s leading architects. In 1757 he published “Chinese furniture...”, a book on Chinese design. Many of Johan Pasch murals in the Chinese Palace at Drottningholm has illustrations from Chambers’s book as inspiration. Our pot is in the 18th century spirit.

Jaques de Maults

was an assistant to Berain and is responsible for decorating the Gallery of Charles XI at the Palace in Stockholm.

The East India ship “Götheborg”

sank on the 12th of September 1745 only 900 meters from its home port in Sweden.

Nicodemus Tessin was the leading Swedish architect in the 17th/18th century. His most famous building is the Royal Palace in Stockholm. He designed a grand house for himself close to the Palace. Our flower pot “Tessin” is decorated with his own plans for his house.
